Brief Description

The New Zealand mud snail (NZMS) has been rapidly expanding its range throughout the Great Lakes Region with most recent discoveries occurring in Michigan and Wisconsin. The impacts of this invasion on native ecosystems and their communities in the Great Lakes region are currently unknown, serving as cause for region-wide concern. The formation of the Great Lakes New Zealand Mud Snail Collaborative is a regional approach to NZMS management, research, outreach, and education. The Collaborative, made up of state, federal, academic, and non-profit institutions, seeks to improve knowledge on the potential impacts of NZMS, minimize spread through human transport, better inform management activities, and raise public awareness.
Most importantly, the Collaborative has been established to provide a network for information sharing. Specific goals include improving our understanding of the current and future status of NZMS in the Great Lakes region, assisting in regional NZMS management strategies and actions, helping to minimize NZMS spread in the Great Lakes Region, and engaging and educating stakeholders and the public on NZMS impacts and issues.

Collaborative Structure

Members of the Great Lakes New Zealand Mud Snail Collaborative represent a diverse group of stakeholders from the Great Lakes region. Participation is voluntary and all inclusive, including representatives from the public, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and state and federal agencies.
The founding members and “core team” of the Collaborative include Trout Unlimited (TU), Oakland University (OU), Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MIDNR), Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE, formerly MDEQ), Grand Valley State University (GVSU), Michigan State University (MSU), Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WIDNR), and the University of Wisconsin – Extension (UWEX).
Trout Unlimited has received Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) funds to establish and grow the Collaborative. TU provides general coordination and support for the Collaborative, including administration and financial oversight of funds provided by GLRI and additional sources. TU works with partners to achieve Collaborative goals and objectives.
